Saint Tail’s hat is sort of like Mary Poppins’s carpet-bag.  She’s even got the whole cast in there!

Fanart of Kaitou Saint Tail (1998), Floral Magician Marybell (1992), Magical Princess Minky Momo (1982) and Yadamon (1992) Each of these had TV series that ran during the 90s. While Saint Tail is a nostalgia bomb for many people in the West (as one of Tokyopop’s early magical girl releases) and Minky Momo is one of Japan’s most beloved magical girls, Marybell and Yadamon are a couple you don’t hear about so often. They are later “majokko”-style series; in Yadamon, a little witch is banished to the futuristic human world, while in Marybell, a sweet magical girl comes from the world of flowers to help people in a rural human society.

The titular heroines of Saint Tail (1994) and Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (1998) unite! Both series are examples of the “magical girl thief” subgenre, a trend blending the fantastical adventures of the transforming magical girl genre with the high-flying heists of “phantom thief” series such as Man of Many Faces (1990) or D.N.Angel (1997). This amalgamation of genres has seen a small revival this season with the Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angels franchise (2011).
